Mechanism Design via the Interim Relaxation

We study revenue maximization for agents with additive preferences, subject to downward-closed constraints on the set of feasible allocations. In seminal work, Alaei [Ala14] introduced a powerful multi-to-single agent reduction based on an ex-ante relaxation of the multi-agent problem. This reduction employs a rounding procedure which is an online contention resolution scheme (OCRS) in disguise, a now widely-used method for rounding fractional solutions in online Bayesian and stochastic optimization problems. In this paper, we leverage our vantage point, 10 years after the work of Alaei, with a rich OCRS toolkit and modern approaches to analyzing multi-agent mechanisms; we introduce a general framework for designing non-sequential and sequential multi-agent, revenue-maximizing mechanisms, capturing a wide variety of problems Alaei's framework could not address. Our framework uses an interim relaxation, that is rounded to a feasible mechanism using what we call a two-level OCRS, which allows for some structured dependence between the activation of its input elements. For a wide family of constraints, we can construct such schemes using existing OCRSs as a black box; for other constraints, such as knapsack, we construct such schemes from scratch. We demonstrate numerous applications of our framework, including a sequential mechanism that guarantees a 2ee 1 3.16 approximation to the optimal revenue for the case of additive agents subject to matroid feasibility constraints. The simplicity of our developed two-level CRSs and OCRSs highlights the strength of our framework: even with a simple analysis, it yields state-of-the-art approximation guarantees across a wide range of settings. Finally, we show how it naturally extends to multi-parameter procurement auctions.


Improved Guarantees for Offline Stochastic Matching via New Ordered Contention Resolution Schemes

Matching is one of the most fundamental and broadly applicable problems across many domains. In these diverse real-world applications, there is often a degree of uncertainty in the input which has led to the study of stochastic matching models. Here, each edge in the graph has a known, independent probability of existing derived from some prediction. Algorithms must probe edges to determine existence and match them irrevocably if they exist. Further, each vertex may have a patience constraint denoting how many of its neighboring edges can be probed. We present new ordered contention resolution schemes yielding improved approximation guarantees for some of the foundational problems studied in this area. For stochastic matching with patience constraints in general graphs, we provide a 0.382-approximate algorithm, significantly improving over the previous best 0.31-approximation of Baveja et al. (2018). When the vertices do not have patience constraints, we describe a 0.432-approximate random order probing algorithm with several corollaries such as an improved guarantee for the Prophet Secretary problem under Edge Arrivals. Finally, for the special case of bipartite graphs with unit patience constraints on one of the partitions, we show a 0.632-approximate algorithm that improves on the recent 1/3-guarantee of Hikima et al. (2021).

Matching based markets, like ad auctions, ride-sharing, and eBay, are inherently online and combinatorial, and therefore have been extensively studied under the lens of online stochastic combinatorial optimization models. The general framework that has emerged uses Contention Resolution Schemes (CRSs) introduced by Chekuri, Vondrák, and Zenklusen for combinatorial problems, where one first obtains a fractional solution to a (continuous) relaxation of the objective, and then proceeds to round it. When the order of rounding is controlled by an adversary, it is called an Online Contention Resolution Scheme (OCRSs), which has been successfully applied in online settings such as posted-price mechanisms, prophet inequalities and stochastic probing.The study of greedy OCRSs against an almighty adversary has emerged as one of the most interesting problems since it gives a simple-to-implement scheme against the worst possible scenario. Intuitively, a greedy OCRS has to make all its decisions before the online process starts.


Online Two-Stage Submodular Maximization

Given a collection of monotone submodular functions, the goal of Two-Stage Submodular Maximization (2SSM) [Balkanski et al., 2016] is to restrict the ground set so an objective selected u.a.r. from the collection attains a high maximal value, on average, when optimized over the restricted ground set. We introduce the Online Two-Stage Submodular Maximization (O2SSM) problem, in which the submodular objectives are revealed in an online fashion. We study this problem for weighted threshold potential functions, a large and important subclass of monotone submodular functions that includes influence maximization, data summarization, and facility location, to name a few. We design an algorithm that achieves sublinear $(1 - 1/e)^2$-regret under general matroid constraints and $(1 - 1/e)(1-e^{-k}k^k/k!)$-regret in the case of uniform matroids of rank $k$; the latter also yields a state-of-the-art bound for the (offline) 2SSM problem. We empirically validate the performance of our online algorithm with experiments on real datasets.

The idea behind a CRS is to first obtain a fractional solution to a (continuous) relaxation of the objective and then round the fractional solution to an integral one. When the order of rounding is controlled by an adversary, Online Contention Resolution Schemes (OCRSs) can be used instead, and have been successfully applied in settings such as prophet inequalities and stochastic probing. In this work, we focus on greedy OCRSs, which provide guarantees against the strongest possible adversary, an almighty adversary. Intuitively, a greedy OCRS has to make all its decisions before the online process starts.
